Review
“Valstain,” the first book in R.J. Jerome's The Pelagius Game series, is a fantasy fiction book, with lots of religious aspects, about an enchanting realm between Heaven and Earth.
The book revolves around Timothy Anderon as he tries to reveal corruption within the Order, a secret religious society that prepares warriors for battling evil.
The world building in this fantasy book is incredible. R. J. Jerome has a knack for building a rich, imaginative world that is detailed yet also approachable.
The characters, especially Tim, are fun to follow and easy to root for (or against, in some cases); their actions and dialogue feel realistic.
The plot is the highlight of the book. It has slower parts to let you appreciate the world, but lots of action and some surprising twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Since this is the first book of the series, the book does leave room for the story to continue.
Overall, this is a fresh, engaging fantasy book that will have fantasy fans of all ages hungry for more.

Message from the Mountain by Chuck Gallagher
Review
"Message from the Mountain: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose," by Chuck Gallagher, is a spirituality book about finding your life's purpose.
In this book. Gallagher creates an engaging story while also prompting the reader to reflect on his or her own life and derive a purpose.
The main character moves from being downtrodden to a lively individual, acting as a metaphor for what can happen if the reader pursues change.
Although the story is interesting, it is the lessons the reader learns that are the highlight of the book.
Gallagher makes it clear what steps someone who is feeling lost must take in order to grow as an individual, such as pursuing quiet reflection and solitude.
The writing is descriptive without being too wordy, and the book is fairly easy to read.
This is a terrific book who wants a quiet read about finding direction in life through reflection and quietude.

The Book of Real and Imaginary Girlfriends by Moctezuma Johnson
Review
Moctezuma Johnson's "The Book of Real and Imaginary Girlfriends" is an eclectic collection of erotic poems that delve into everything from steamy physical sex to missing someone.
The poems, although all consistent with Johnson's style, are strikingly different in theme (note: they all contain sex); some are very physical, some are very emotional, some comment on societal views of sex, and there is even an about the author piece titled "A Rumor."
One of the strengths of the poem is that it captures thoughts pertaining to sex that are often unexplored; one might even venture to say the book focuses more on the mental aspect of sex than the physical.
The writing is direct, with blunt language and descriptive figurative language.
There is a series of poems about someone named Amy that is particularly affecting, leaving the reader wondering if such strong poetry was completely contrived or inspired by reality.
If you are an erotica fan who likes reflective, mentally stimulating poetry, then "The Book of Real and Imaginary Girlfriends" is the perfect collection for you.

In Search of the Hidden Garden by Renato Ariano
Review
Renato Ariano's "In Search of the Hidden Garden" is a beautifully unique science book that could also be considered a fable with elements of a suspense novel.
The book is extremely fascinating and gives you facts about many subjects, as well as an interesting plot.
The plot is about a cypress pollen named Zeffirino; he leaves his paternal plant with the hopes of finding meaning.
The journey he takes is filled with adventure and suspense. Ultimately, he finds a wondrous hidden garden that reveals many of the answers he was looking for.
The author is a specialist in allergies, so it is clear he knows the subject of pollen well. The writing shows he knows philosophy well, too.
The story makes the reader think deeply about questions of life and existence and purpose.
Whether you are young or old, if you are looking for a book packed with scientific knowledge, filled with philosophical questions, and brimming with a good story, then this book is definitely for you.

The Wellness Approach by Jonathan B Spages
Review
"The Wellness Approach: The Secrets of Health your Doctor is Afraid to Tell You," by Dr. Jonathan Spages, is a book about caring for your health before and after illness occur.
The book covers a wide range of topics, from why we get sick to tackling allergies without drugs to losing weight.

The book is quite comprehensive, even including information on how to prepare children for a lifetime of good health, but is approachable and easy-to-read.
If you are looking for a book on alternative ways to treat and prevent illness, then "The Wellness Approach" is perfect for you.

Sin by Sharron Riddle
Review
"Sin," by Sharron Riddle, is a fun-filled YA fantasy about a sixteen-year-old girl, named Sin, who goes from being an ordinary girl to being part of a magical aspect of the world that battles evil.
The plot is very engaging, not taking long before the characters are on the fantasy equivalent of a wild goose chase.
The world that Riddle has built, complete with druids, fairies, and zombies, is both approachable and imaginative.
The characters, including Sin's eccentric yet beautiful druid aunts, are well-rounded and interesting to root for.
The highlight of the book, though, is the writing.
Written in first-person, the reader gets a firsthand look into Sin's mind.
Riddle has a knack for perfectly channeling the thoughts and speech of a sixteen-year-old and putting them in a story.
If you are looking for a fresh, imaginative YA fantasy with an exciting plot and characters, then "Sin" is the perfect book for you.

The Straight Crimes by Matt Juhl
Review
“The Straight Crimes,” the debut novel of Matt Juhl, is an electric love story between Jones and Nik, set in a world where homosexuality is the norm and heterosexuals are discriminated against.
After moving from Louisiana, Harper Jones meets Nik Roberts on the last day of school at Silver Shores High in Michigan. Even though classmates glare and call her “redneck,” fearless Harper stands up for herself and even defends Nik from bully, Ricky Wiley, who calls him “queer.”
Soon after their date to the carnival, Nick opens up to Harper about the physical abuse he had suffered all his life from his father, Jett, and Harper tells Nik that her junkie mom, Mindi, had set their Louisiana home on fire purposely, which was why they had to relocate to Michigan and live with Aunt Faye.
Harper and Nik’s undeniable attraction makes their hearts skip beats and long for more of the other, but the perfection of their relationship is scary given the negative attitude of the world toward heterosexuals.
It becomes too much for Harper to deal with, so she seeks friendship with Traci Galva who is kind to her, especially after Harper is evicted due to her mother’s continuous drug use.
The greatest element of this book is Juhl's flawless and descriptive writing style. Juhl excels at painting the scene, setting the context for each interaction, and hooking you until the end to have the enormous tensions that build up then resolve.
“The Straight Crimes” is a very well-done romantic suspense novel that makes the reader ask big questions about society with engaging characters and a gripping plot.

Separation by Cassandra Lane
Review
"Separation," by Cassandra Lane, is a novel about the trials and triumphs of forbidden love.
Set in post-emancipation New York, the plot is about the difficulty of sustaining a relationship between a biracial woman and a white man in a society that frowns upon such relationships.
The plot begins slowly, but picks up pace throughout the book.
Lane did an excellent job writing well-rounded, period-correct characters; they capture the sentiments of the time perfectly.
The book's writing in general is very compelling and moving. Lane's writing is reminiscent of a 19th century writer, very descriptive and thoughtful.
By far, the highlight of the book is its theme of love -- that love can emerge the victor, even in situations that forbid it.
Overall, this is a great book for anyone who wants to read a historical romance about forbidden love with very descriptive writing reminiscent of the classics -- and fans are sure to be joyed to learn there is a second book in the series!
